From virtual reality to fitness devices

Virtual reality (VR) can be defined as a system of technological tools (hardware and software), aimed at enabling a user to carry out cognitive and sensorimotor activities in a virtual environment. Since the early 90’s, VR coupled with an exercise device has been used in fitness and rehabilitation contexts. In such settings, the general objective was to increase user’s involvement/adherence toward an exercise. By using a device that diverts attention from unpleasant bodily sensations and thus potentially delaying the onset of boredom and fatigue, one can indeed incite higher involvement. As a consequence, performance and psychological benefits can be expected.
