Heading perception in tunnels

During car driving, accurate perception of heading direction and self-motion velocity are crucial. Many prvious studies have investigated how human observers pick up information during driving, We are currently studying how these performance are affected by the 3D layout of the environnement. With this regard, tunnels are very interesting.

Figure 2 : Examples of tunnel environnement for heading perception studies. Top left panel shows a pure tube with a given diameter and a given curvature radius. Top right panel shows the same tube but with a flat surface simulating the road plane. Botton panels show two examples of added signs that will help observers in estimating their heading direction relative to the tube curvature radius. (courtesy of OKTAL®)
